HMS Endeavour’s Voyage

In commemoration to mark the 250th year since Captain James Cook made his first landfall in New Zealand, the replica HMS Endeavour will visit Mercury Bay.

A highlight of the commemorations is the six-boat Tuia 250 Voyage Flotilla, which will start its journey in Gisborne on 5 October and will sail to Uawa/Tolaga Bay before visiting Mercury Bay from October 18th - 21st.

When the boats visit Mercury Bay there will be opportunities for the public to go aboard. Alongside the boats, a range of other events will include:

  • National Science Technology Roadshow about Pacific and European voyaging

  • Pop-up planetarium focusing on celestial navigation

  • Activities by waka hourua crew to instruct the public how to use waka sails and build a star compass

  • Speaker presentations about the Spirit of New Zealand youth programmes

  • Educational sessions hosted by the HMB Endeavour crew

  • Display of story boards about the R. Tucker Thompson

  • Wānanga and educational programme about sustainable oceans

The Tuia Stage

Join us at our event next month as part of the Mercury Bay/Te Whanganui o Hei Tuia Encounters 250 commemorations. The Tuia Stage is a free, cultural showcase of Coromandel's best musicians, poets, and storytellers held on two stages, over 12 hours on Saturday October 19 from 10 am - 10 pm.

More than 140 artists are coming together, collaborating and supporting each other to reflect their expressions of the kaupapa of Tuia - Encounters 250.

Opportunities to see this many local performers together in one place are rare, so bring along your picnic blanket or bean bag and settle in for this relaxed family-friendly, alcohol-free event at Whakau Reserve (Taylors Mistake, Whitianga).

The market hosts nearly 100 stalls of every description filling the Memorial Hall Complex, and outside in more of an open air market. ARTwaikino is now in its 19th year and is a well established art exhibition on the Coromandel Peninsula. All artwork is for sale and includes: paintings, craft, photography and sculpture. Its open Labour Weekend Saturday October 26th to Monday 28th from 10am to 4pm. Its a gold coin donation to enter and all proceeds go to the upkeep of the community hall.
